The Shipibo-Konibo language is an ancestral code of ancient wisdom being shared with the world as the medical tradition expands. Every day there are more people being introduced to this beautiful tongue and are eager to learn and express themselves using the ceremonial bewá or song. Thanks to our various language education initiatives we have shared this language with over 100 medicine practitioners and students around the world. Our goal is to bridge the ancient understandings, symbols, and the medicine of the joi (word, voice, language) to help you develop your medicine.

You can book personalized lessons with Macarena Arias with the option of having a Shipibo-Konibo teacher. You can receive coaching with medicine language, icaro composition, and icaro understanding. All classes are held virtually via zoom.

1. Jakon Joi: Build your foundations with Modules 1 and 2
This foundational course is aimed at helping you build the basic structures of Shipibo-Konibo language through dynamic conversation and song. You will learn the pronunciation, vocabulary, suffixes, and grammar, and apply those to your icaros and essential day-to-day interactions. With this foundation you will be able to understand your icaros in ceremony, begin to write your own phrases, and communicate with the family that you study with.

2. Koshi Joi: Advanced 3-month Icaro Immersion
This course is recommended for those who have already taken modules 1 and 2 or have some prior study of the Shipibo-Konibo language. This course offers a deep-dive into medicine language and will help your refine, finetune, and increase your understanding of medicine work. The aim is for you to start finding your own expression through your medicine, as well as understand medical jargon at a more advanced level.

Translation Services
Macarena Arias together with Professor Pakan Meni or Wexa Metsa, are available to translate icaros. Each icaro is carefully transcribed and translated by Macarena Arias from Shipibo-Konibo to English, and later carefully revised by Professor Pakan Meni, a Shipibo-Konibo linguist, or Maestro curandero Wexa Metsa. You can choose your translation tier
Tier 1: Basic translation services
This translation includes transcription to Shipibo-Konibo language, general translation to English, and revision by Professor Pakan Meni or Wexa Metsa.

This translation includes an added glossary with key words and suffixes and a more grammar-centered translation so you are able to identify language use in the song. This translation includes an added explanation of song structure and segments for you to understand the work that the healer is doing.
